Renting a car when you want to take a one-off road trip or run errands makes sense. For one it helps you save money that you would have otherwise spent on taxis, and for another, it helps you travel on your own schedule. That said, renting a car for the first time can be a rather daunting process. That’s why, we’ve listed out 5 things you need to know about car rentals.

Keep the Number of Drivers to a Minimum

Whether you’re heading out for the weekend with friends or going camping with your family, it’s best if you keep the number of drivers to a minimum. Keep in mind that you’ll need to pay an additional fee for every additional driver you add to the rental policy. Although some rental companies waive this charge, you will want to check with them if you intend to add another driver to the policy.

Rental Cars Are More Expensive for Young Drivers

Your 21-year old son may be an excellent driver and have a spotless driving history, but rental car companies will charge you more if the primary driver is relatively young. Also, even though people can get rental cars at the age of 20 or 21, they’ll likely be required to pay an additional fee if they’re under 25.

Check If You Already Have Rental Car Insurance

Rental car insurance companies are notorious for trying to sell their customers rental car insurance plans. The thing is, these plans cost quite a bit. But, if you already have an auto insurance plan, it’s likely this coverage is included with your plan. Similarly, if you pay for the rental car with your credit card, you may get this coverage for free. So, make sure to check if you already have rental car insurance.

Avoid Renting a Car at the Airport

We know it’s convenient to rent a car at the airport when you are traveling. But, rental cars available near the airport cost quite a lot. If you can, just take a taxi or bus to the nearest city and find a rental car company there.

Don’t Return the Car with an Empty Fuel Tank

Yes, you can return the car with an empty fuel tank, but the company will charge you a refueling fee, which will likely cost two or three times what you would have had to pay at the gas station. So, plan in advance to stop at a nearby gas station and fill the tank before you return the car.
